Obituary from Rabbi Joseph Ekstein, President of Dor Yeshorim, on the Passing of Dr. Hua Chin Chen
It is with profound sadness and deep respect that we at Dor Yeshorim mark the passing of Dr. Hua Chin Chen, a pioneering force in the fight against Tay-Sachs disease. Her remarkable leadership at KJMC, which housed one of the largest Tay-Sachs wards in the world, and her groundbreaking partnership with Dor Yeshorim will forever be etched in our collective memory.
Dr. Chen’s visionary work and dedication to the Ashkenazi Jewish community in Brooklyn led to the virtual elimination of Tay-Sachs, a fatal genetic disease that once plagued so many families. Her tireless efforts and commitment to implementing comprehensive genetic screening programs saved countless lives and brought hope to generations.
Her collaboration with Dor Yeshorim was nothing short of extraordinary. Together, we forged a path to safeguard the health and future of our community, and her contributions to this sacred mission will never be forgotten. Dr. Chen was not only a brilliant physician but a compassionate and selfless individual whose life’s work was devoted to alleviating suffering and ensuring a brighter, healthier future for those she served.
May her legacy continue to inspire, and may her family find comfort in knowing the profound impact she had on so many lives. We mourn the loss of a true partner and a beloved friend.
Yehi Zichra Baruch – May her memory be a blessing.
Rabbi Joseph Ekstein
